About

The Family Reads program helps fathers and their elementary and middle school age children with reading, math, financial literacy, wellness, and leadership development. This evidence-based empowerment program engages fathers and their children in a variety of activities designed to expand their knowledge and skills. Participants connect with individuals and resources to promote learning and improve workforce and tech upskilling opportunities for fathers and the entire family. Program and community leaders inspire literacy by discussing their lives and careers through engaging sessions about transformative books. Additionally, the program collaborates with:

  • Statewide, regional, and local nonprofit organizations
  • Schools
  • Workforce development programs
  • Justice-involved initiatives
  • Metropolitan, regional, and local libraries and Friends of the Library
  • Government entities
  • Faith communities and sacred sector organizations

Mission
The mission of the Family Reads Program is to engage fathers and their school aged children to improve comprehensive literacy, reading, academic and workforce outcomes and skill development for the students and overall parenting, literacy, reading, workforce, and wellness outcomes for the entire family unit.

Services

Program activities include:

  • Fun and Engaging Family Sessions (30-90 minutes) to increase academic and literacy outcomes for families throughout designated areas in Ohio
  • Strengthening and Deepening Understanding of Report Card Information:
    • Student report cards
    • School report cards
    • District report cards

Additional activities focus on:

  • Reading improvement and workforce development and upskilling
  • Enhanced parental engagement with students
  • Resource referrals
  • Outings, activities, conferences and summits to develop a supportive fatherhood community and ecosystem

The State of Ohio Collective provides services in education, economic and workforce development, health, technology, housing, the sacred sector, and the arts.
